i have to deal with that kind of crap all the time in sales. if a person is so set in thier opinion there is little use in trying to bring them around (there is an analogy about argueing with a crazy person that woudl be very apt here). much od the time that are simply looking for someone - ANYONE - to attack and vent thier bile upon and you just happen to be in thier cross hairs.
A very simple "Thank you for sharing & have a good day" in my most sincere used car salesman voice usually works for me. yes its patronizing as hell but it send them a very clear message that you have better things to do than be bothered with them.
ITS A KILT, G** D*** IT!

Jeez Mac,
Still hard not to let that stuff get under your skin. Sounds like she may have some dementia going on too...that sort of behavior is common with old age, Alzheimer's, and other deterioration of the elderly brain conditions.
She may have been showing off for her friends too. Building herself up by taking you on and putting you down. So sadly unnecessary.
She could have as easily come into your shop to check you out, offer advice.
Me thinks it a waste to reengage her to seek her counsel. She'd probably just use the opportunity to beat you up some more.
Whatever is going on in her addled brain is her stuff, not yours. Don't let her dementia live rent free in your head.

In my opinion, that is the difference. A traditionalist is someone like you, Todd, who prefers to wear the kilt in a traditional manner but would not presume to think it applies to everyone. That woman, someone who feels that everyone must wear it that way is just an angry snob.

Do you think that it's just stubbornness? I wonder if these people would rather (like P1M said) see it die than see other people take it up?

To that she started in about how I should be ashamed of myself and no Scot would dare wear a kilt that was not tartan.

I think maybe someone forgot to tell Geoffrey Tailor, et al, about that one.

I really like that definition of a traditionalist. I'm proud to use that definition to describe my attitude.
