It's not as awful as some I've seen.

As for the "spats," tartan footless stockings are called "moggans" and would have been worn with "currans" or "cruarain," which are hide shoes laced onto the foot (ancestor of the modern "ghillie brogues") with the hairy side out.

The hair actually improves traction on wet grass and in mud.
