I'd have to say it wouldn't likely go over well here (Arizona).

Suede around here would be stained rather quickly in sweat, or by the "mud rain" we get a few times per year.

Wool can be cleaned more easily than suede.

Ah, but not everyone lives in AZ. I certainly wouldn't wear one where I live presently... Hawaii is fairly well known for being a warm place. Now, when I get to Maine...

A suede kilt would probably look great, but if you got caught out in the rain, it could really get messed up. I never been able to understand that about suede. Are not cows pretty much out there? What do they do when it rains . . . run to the farm house and pound on the door, yelling let us in, our skin is suede and it raining outside!!!

I'm pretty certain that if I make 'em, they'll be faux suede. Even then, as far as I can tell, I'm looking at $30/yd for material!

Well Sir I was Honolulu in January and all of Feb. I pretty much wore my leather kilts all the time there! I was rather comfortable. Too bad we didn't meet. Maybe another time.
I'll tell you this for what it's worth, it's a different skill set to work with leather. Problem is they don't make 6yd cows not even in Texas!
All the best... this reminds me of a classic joke which isn't PC but the punch line is green side up (guys laying sod) Suede side IN! feels nicer to the skin!

Of course, Blu is quite correct - suede is just not a practical material for a kilt. I once had a gorgeous suede jacket, but it was the very devil to keep looking like something wearable! Having said that, if someone came up with a suede treatment that would reliably repel stains, watermarks, etc. then I'd be head of the queue to get one. But then, I'm like that!

hmm...here is a thought...

considering that the water marks on sueded seem to be the main detractor here, would it be possible to purposefully water mark the seude, similar to the way a tie-died shirt is made?

there is MICROFIBER SUEDE - 100% polyester upholstery fabric that coudl be used for kilts - it wold be a bit on the heavy side but it comes in around $15 per yard and woud be resistant to the water/food/other stuff perils of real suede

Ultimately, this would be what I would use. I actually own some furniture upholstered in the microfiber suede, and I tell you it is quite plush. Pretty easy to clean, too, as my 3 kids can help me attest!

Please let me know how it turns out - i have been debating using this for a kilt but have a dozen or so other fabrics on the list ahead of it but woudl be willing to bump it up should it prove a workable option....

You'd never find me in suede. That seems like it would create an oven in your crotch! even with the airflow. Plus it seems that it would get quite sticky on your legs.
