The comment about my shirt tails happened many years ago when I was about 18; first time I'd worn a kilt to dance.
I did not take the comment badly, but was glad that someone pointed out that a bit of white cloth floating out beneath the kilt was far from elegant.
No, I'm not going to dance with less energy, as someone suggested, just to keep my kilt down. I've danced this way all my adult life and intend to go on till I die! The kilt is made to fly and swing, which is one of the reasons we like it.

Martin,
My only point in my last message was, by trying to resolve the "shirt tail" issue, you may have been en route to a BIGGER "underwear" issue. It would be unfortunate if you want to alot of effort to avoid one set of criticism only to receiving even harsher criticisms.
I think you have a choice: dance and dress your way (ie. the third way suggested in my earlier message); or try to make your critic(s) happy. I think you should take your own advice and do it your way "until you die" and let the critics go ____.

I say dance to your heart's content in whatever way the spirit moves you.
