1/2" strap?
I found some rather unique looking brass clasps, but they would only fit a narrow strap, and the clip and attached links are already just over 3" long, so I don't want to add more hardware. Is a 1/2" strap too narrow to use as a sporran strap?

half inch seems a bit narrow, but I think it would look just fine. plus those clasps are great. they would go great with a brass belt buckle.

those are called french snaps
used alot in falconry and very strong.... for a while they wear out quickly

Mine are 1/2" to 5/8" wide and work and look fine...I think

The entire strap doesn't have to be 1/2", just narrow down the ends of a wider strap to fit the eye of the snaps. It'll be strong enough, if that's the concern. Lots of western style belts use a buckle that is much narrower than the belt with no problems.
You could even attach the snap by using a separate piece of 1/2" leather stitched onto the wide strap.
