Well, I am not sure whether West Sussex is kilt-friendly or kilt-tolerant! In the fourteen years I have lived here, I have NEVER seen another kilted fellow out and about - even when I attended a very formal Burns' Night Supper here about nine years ago, out of the 75 or so people present I was the only one wearing the kilt.
Of course, friends come to visit me at home in their kilts, but they're not 'locals'. I really do not recall being on the receiving-end of non-complimentary remarks hereabouts, and it's been several years since I was complimented on my dress. I guess it's all down to the fact that we Brits have a natural reserve and, in general, do not make a habit of speaking to strangers - even if we think they look fantastic! It would take a lot for me to compliment a stranger on his/her appearance, even if it involved kilts - and I'm not particularly slow in coming forward thesedays!!!
