    Cleaning?

For those in the United States:

Where do you take your handsewn wool kilts for cleaning? I'd hate to walk into the average dry cleaners and expect them to know how to do the whole thing as uncommon as they are around here.

I've also dropped a note on the local pipe band to see if they have a "preferred" cleaner.

I contacted the local pipe and drum corps. and brought my kilt to the cleaners they recommended. That was for my lightiweight 5 yard kilts. I'm growing to learn that Hamish is right in stating that sending them to the cleaners not something that you really want to do. I'll dig around and find the thread here about cleaning kilts and have it posted here in a bit.

here is the thread about dry cleaning a kilt...take heed.

Thank you very much. That makes a lot of sense.

I've been using Glassman's suggestion from this thread - the Dryel home dry cleaning kit. Other than covering the straps (there's a warning about not using this with leather), there's no muss, no fuss.

Well, if you're in the Phoenix area, I could recommend a very good cleaner. It's the same cleaner that our local kilt rental shop (Arizona Kilts) takes their kilts to, so they do a good job & have plenty of experience cleaning & pressing this specialty item. It's the only place I take any of my Highland gear to be cleaned. (And they're not paying me for this endorsement.)

Scottsdale, actually, but I'm not averse to driving a bit if I need to.

(No, I don't need any cleaned now - I'm looking to the future when I'm certain that someone will spill something somewhere...)

You're in Scottsdale? That's perfect, 'cuz so is this cleaner. It's near the Airpark. The place is Crown Cleaners, 13802 N. Scottsdale Rd #148, phone# 480-948-7740

Arizona Kilts takes all of their kilts there for cleaning.

And speaking of Arizona Kilts, have you ever stopped in there? If not, you ought to stop by when you take your kilt to the cleaners 'cuz they're about a block away at Scottsdale Rd & Evans. Graeme & Jackie are lovely folks. Tell 'em I said "Hi" if you see 'em.

Graeme sold me a stag-handled sgian dubh a while back. He'd been open for about a month, as I recall.
