"Spanked" by a Scott

This past weekend I attended my a benefit auction for my son's school, of course kilted.

I matched my Stillwater Saffron with cream shirt and hose, muted tie, black shoes, belt and sporran, silver kllt-pin (form my wedding) and flashes made of saffron colored felt. I'm sure I am going to get requests for pictures, but I don't have any- may soon.

In an earlier post, I said I didn't think the saffron would work for anything formal/semi-formal. Wow was I wrong. Once I dressed it up, it looked great.

But not why I'm posting. A girl in my son's class has parents from Scotland, and I have to admit I was a bit nervous showing up in a kilt. They were no problem, said it looked nice and no further discussion. However, the girl's aunt, who was over from Scotland for a visit, was there, and had quite a bit to say.

Let me preface this by saying she was completely pleasant and good-natured at all times.

For starters, there was a cash bar, and I would guess the bartender had gotten a fair amount of her cash before I arrived. When we were introduced, she said- "I see you're wearing a skirt." I didn't really know how to respond. I let out a feeble laugh and she followed up with, "we get a kick out of all these American 'utilikilts' in Scotland- if it's not wool and tartan- we call it a skirt." I protested and let her know it was wool and showed her there was a tartan pattern in the weave, and she rolled her eyes and let it die there. We ended up hanging out most of the evening and the few times it came up (mostly from others asking her what she thought) she was complimentary and called it a kilt.

I got lots of compliments, and had quite a few very nice conversations. All in all it was a great evening. Just a bit uncomfortable for a while.

Somehow, I don't quite feel she's speaking on behalf of all Scots.

Sounds like the Saffron made a super look.
I wonder about the "we get a kick out ..." also, there sure are a lot of spokes- people for the we's of the world.

I think if you reflect on the wide range of opinions of Scots nationals who are members here - you'll realize her opinion is less than universal. My parents always taught me to "speak only for yourself - unless your carrying worms in your pockets..." :rolleyes:

To add to what pdcorlis and Caradoc said, simply because she's a Scot does not make her an authority on kilts.

Hhmmm, I showed my father some of the Stillwater kilts etc and he called them 'skirts' too. He is Scottish and an 'old skool' kilt supporter, if its not woollen and tartan then its not a kilt he says I think she didn't speak on behalf of all Scots but yeah know...old Scottish women and kilts...there's some connection there.

I rather strongly suspect that 99.999999% of the Scots, worldwide would happily inform her that she doesn't speak for THEM,either....

Glad the evening/afternoon got better as time went on.
