Who doesn't "get it"in your community?

Hi guys, I'm from London so I live in a very culturally aware society and come across people from all walks of life everyday.

I should think 99.9% of people in Britain know what a kilt is but you still get funny looks for wearing one out in public. The opinion in my country seems to be "Why are you wearing a kilt in the highstreet? Are you on your way to a wedding?" Kilts are considered by the general public to be something reserved for very formal occasions.

My girlfriend seems to share this opinion and its become the running joke whenever I say i'm going into town with her I say "Hold on a second, i'll just change into my kilt" the look of panic on her face is classic!

As for actual negative remarks I must say young girls in groups tend to be the most irksome. They giggle (always as you've just walked past) stare, point and make stupid remarks. Recently I walked past a group of 11-13 year old lads playing soccer who all stopped and stared at me....I thought "Here we go" and braced myself for the inevitable taunts but they said nothing, just looked for a few seconds then ignored me and continued playing.

So teenagers and drunks are the biggest problem for me

No problems here. We have a large Hispanic population here and I've never encounterd any hostility or had any tense moments, just confused looks. The ladies have been appreciative though.

down here in the midwest, it is almost always the teenagers when in groups, trying to impress each other. Occasionally I'll get someone who is oblivious as to what a kilt is, but most of the time it is just someone trying to be a smarta$$. Other than groups of kids, most people regardless of race or age don't really say or do much, unless it is a compliment.

Here in Baltimore, it's definitely teenagers of all races and ethnic groups. Most people above the age of, say, eighteen, may look and shake their head, but they apparently have enough manners to keep their opinions to themselves, or at the very least ask an honest question. It's been my experience that teenage males tend to be the loudest while teenage females tend to be the most cruel. I find it far more unnerving to be the subject of giggling and pointing than a hearty, "WHAT THE #@&*!".

Then again, with my background, I'm also used to people staring and "not getting it" when it comes to how I express myself, so it really doesn't bother me much at all to begin with. I actually have to work to pay attention to how other people are reacting to me.

I'm going to have to agree with that one, again drawing from my experiences with demonstrations at grade schools and high schools.

Given their propensity for comments, I'm still amazed that the human race manages to continue reproducing at its current rate.

In addition to my previous comments about Teenagers being the worst. I should be more specific than just teenagers in general.

Chavs are overwealmingly the biggest pain in the neck as any kilt wearer from Great Britain will testify!!
