Buzz Kidder kilts? But wait, not the canvas!

    Gents:

Has anyone any experience with the Buzz Kidder Black Watch poly kilts? I noticed them and thought they might be worth a look. If no one else has any feedback, I'll probably have to go to San Antonio sometime soon and pick one up.

    What say ye all?

For the price I would be very interested in a good solid review....I'm sure there are people here who are also interested.

It does seem that the kilt market is getting flooded with Black Watch tartan kilts of all designs and fabrics...

I like that they provide some background on the tartan, but 10oz in rayon sounds really light weight to me.

Buzz sent me a swatch of the material when he was looking into starting his tartan line about a year and a half ago. I didn't want to purchase any of the material from him, because we were moving toward an "all PV" lineup for our Casual and Semi Trad. The material WASN'T BAD, but it wasn't great. The weight was "acceptable". It wasn't as heavy as PV, but was definitely heavier than SK material.

    Well . . .

    Gents:

In the interest of science (as I explained it to my wife) I started to order a Buzz Kidder Black Watch tartan. I said, "Sure, it costs the same as a USAK casual, but in the interest of science and so forth, I'm willing to take the plunge. . . "

So I started to order one.

Shipping changed my mind. 109 for the kilt, plus TWENTY ONE DOLLARS for USPS delivery. Buzz Kidder is in San Antonio, I'm in Houston.

USA Kilts have delivery price built into the purchase price, and they're (to say the least) a very decent casual/contemporary.

So fiddle dee dee, says I. Next time I'm in San Antonio, whether sporting the family around the Riverwalk or dropping off a pistola with Alex Hamilton for some work, I'll figger in a little extra time and go by the BK shop, and look into their canvas line. For the "extra summer kilt" I'm in need of, I think I'll go with Rocky at USAK.

    All the best, y'all.

That shipping fee can really sway the Total Cost of Ownership. That's too bad it's such high shipping for USPS.

I guess it wouldn't be too hard to apply a couple of cosmetic straps to a USA casual to get a similar appearance. You could stitch them to the apron and then add a piece of velcro on the back to hold it in position. Hmmmmm, anyone tried this?

    Cavscout:

I'm not really a strap guy, when all is said and done. On a couple of my Stillwaters, I just cut the straps and buckles off, and treat them as mandatory-belt-kilts.

I can live with straps, mind you, but I have no complaints with velcro closure.

Now it's just a matter of choosing the right tartan for the USAK philly, and I'll be all set. (I've got a Farquarson now, and my other tartan kilts include Black Watch, Irish National, Seaforth Highlanders and Macleod Hunting.)

You might try Hunting Fraser. It's got a brown base, which would give you a unique and versatile kilt very different from the others in you collection...and it's the next one on my list which I'd love to see a picture of since I can't buy it right now

I don't think Rocky offers the Fraser Hunting. I was halfway thinking of either the Macmillan or the Buchanan, pleated to the yellow stripe. Heck, maybe even the MacKay, pleated to the blue.
