Don't believe everything you are told A sporran does not a kilt make. Oh, and no, I've never had that! It's true!

I was very fond of that 'standard' style and regret its passing. Here's a photo of my first Utilikilt (November 2000). It has faded over the years but it is a Caramel Workman's model and is in the 'standard' style:



This kilt is now archived in my Kilt Kollection and was replaced a year ago by a current Caramel Workman's UK. I have four 'standard' UKs and seven 'Neo-Trads', and there is absolutely no way I would wear a sporran with any of them.

Unfortunately I know people in the UK who would say you look exactly like you're wearing a skirt

Don't get me wrong cos I don't but I know alot of people would..not nessasarily stupid, ignorant people just people who aren't used to seeing kilts and automatically associate what you're wearing with the nearest familiar garment....a skirt, thats the only logical reason I can think of :confused:

Jeez, I have 13 Utilikilts and wear them most of the time - only time I've ever had them called skirts is when the person was fishing for the right word - kilt - and then switched to kilt as soon as they remembered it or were reminded of it.

The guy who invented Utilikilts calls them a skirt. A kilt is a type of skirt. The stuff they put around the bottom of beds is a type of skirt. The stuff they put around the undersides of mobile homes is a type of skirt.

I don't care what people call it - I love wearing them.

I also have 3 Pittsburgh Kilts and there's not a narrow apron on any of them.

Course, I live in the boonies of the western U.S. of A where there are very few kilt police.

A telephone is a telephone whether it is mobile, cell, rotary, tone or whatever else you can come up with. A hat is a hat is a hat, doesn't matter much as long as it is worn on your head.

Now, here's the rub ... a skirt is a skirt is a skirt. A kilt is not even it's own catagory, just a subcatagory of what defines a skirt. Now, to disappoint us all even more, a kilt is defined as a pleated skirt whether for a man or woman (arrrrgggghhhhhh).

What is at issue here on the forum is not whether a Utilikilt is a kilt or not ... it is a kilt, it is a pleated skirt. What's at issue is whether or not it is a SCOTTISH Kilt. It is not.

even full kilts with sporrans are called skirts
by the people who dont know better
