I need to make flashes
I have left over tartan fabric from when I had my Kilt re-sized. Would like to make flashes out of this fabric. How do I do that? Does anyone have a pattern?

Flashes seem to come in many shapes and sizes, depending upon your kiltmaker or Messrs Lochcarron! I can barely resew buttons, but I have made many pairs of flashes over the years - no two pairs being of the same dimensions, or even style. The latest were made from the off-cuts when I had my "X Marks the Scot" tartan kilt tailored:
I usually try to incorporate a loop in the fabric, but the off-the-peg flashes sold by most Highland Outfitters seldom have them, so I guess loops are not that important. In the case of these "X Marks..." ones, there was insufficient suitable material available for the loops.
If I can make these, anyone can - believe me!

Why Double flashes on each leg
Question: Why are ther double flashes on each hose? I have made some flashes and only use one ribbon per. It looks fine to me.
Any hard rules against this?

The bits peeking out from under the rolled-down hose top are supposed to resemble the tabs that would remain after tying a bow in a garter.

Heh. I only know that because I'm far more used to wearing a 16th century ensemble, with moggans and hide currans. Those'd be the footless stockings made by cutting tartan on the bias and seaming it up the back of the calf, with "shoes" made by lacing hide onto the foot. The latter are the ancestor of the modern "ghillie" shoes.
If they're extremely well-tailored, the moggans can stay up without garters. Mine aren't.
