Yes, the left lapel is exactly the right place for the medals in miniature and definately not full sized medals.

If someone wants to challenge me they had better have their DD-214 to show me BEFORE I worry about their challenge. (I'm actually very flattered when they ask because I'm so damned cute and don't look my age ( 53 ) so it's a compliment to be told that I don't look old enough to have served any time in the bush...the bush in Viet Nam that is...but Grenada really blew a hole in my underwear too...;o)~.)

    Chris,

Guys like us don't need to see DD-214's, we can both recognize the genuine article when we see it. You've either been there or you haven't ... the smell of boot polish is on us all and you can't fake that. Nobody ever challenges me, I'm the genuine article and they know it when they shake my hand. Plus, who the hell else would even know what a DD-214 is. LOL!!!

    Kilt On.

Veterans are allowed to wear their medals on civilian clothes for occasions of a military nature, which the military dining would surely qualify. The medals should be worn in a fashion similar to that of the active duty personnel present at the function, that is, if the active duty are wearing miniature medals, the veterans should as well. This does of course assume that you actually earned the medals you wear.

Thought I might chime in here. I believe that the regs are that any veteran may wear the uniform forever as long as the situation and nature of the wearing is in accordance with the regs regarding the wearing of the uniform. Basically, not in association with political rallys, or any activity that might bring discredit upon the armed forces.
I like the idea of using the minis as klt pins. Gonna have to make Air Assault and Airborne ones. Not so sure about the CIB though. Seems like it would be a bit too big lengthwise to balance out right.

From AR670-1 (I'm sure the other services have similar provisions):

30–4. Wear of the uniform by former members of the Army

    a. Unless qualified under another provision of this regulation, or under the provisions of section 772, title 10, United States Code (10 USC 772), former members of the Army may wear the uniform if they served honorably during a declared or undeclared war, and if their most recent service was terminated under honorable conditions. Personnel who qualify under these conditions will wear the Army uniform in the highest grade they held during such war service, in accordance with 10 USC 772.

    b. The uniform is authorized for wear only for the following ceremonial occasions, and when traveling to and from the ceremony or function. Uniforms for these occasions are restricted to service and dress uniforms; the BDU and physical fitness uniforms will not be worn.

    (1) When attending military funerals, memorial services, weddings, inaugurals, and other occasions of ceremony.

    (2) When attending parades on national or state holidays, or other patriotic parades or ceremonies in which any active or reserve United States military unit is taking part. Wear of the Army uniform at any other time, or for any other purpose than stated above, is prohibited.

30–5. Wear of the uniform by Medal of Honor recipients.

Personnel awarded the Medal of Honor may wear the Army uniform at their pleasure, except under the circumstances in paragraph 1–10
    j.

30–6. Wear of medals on civilian clothes

Retired personnel and former members of the Army (as described above) may wear all categories of medals described in this regulation on appropriate civilian clothing. This includes clothes designed for veteran and patriotic organizations on Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, and Armed Forces Day, as well as at formal occasions of ceremony and social functions of a military nature. Personnel may wear either full-size or miniature medals. Personnel who wear medals on civilian clothes should place the medals on the clothing in approximately the same location and in the same manner as for the Army uniform, so they look similar to medals worn on the Army uniform.
