I've been told that you're not suppose to have the sporran strap through the loops but I do it anyway. It keeps it at the right height for me. I got the leather strap from Robert at RKilts. It looks great and helps protect the kilt.

The loops in the back of the kilt are actually for the sporran. The kilt belt is usually worn overtop of the loops. If it is done up right it will not move. Now since this is for a wedding, if you are wearing a Prince Charlie or Argyle and waistcoat, than a belt is not needed.

What was the plan for the rest of the outfit? dress sporran? jacket? etc. A good reference point is to actually look at some of the vendor sites that sell everything.

The leather sporran straps made by Robert at Rkilts are great, I have one and really like it. I were my sporran strap outside of the belt loops, as P1M notes when nature calls you need to be able to move it to the side. If you wear it through the belt loops it is very difficult to move to the side.

same loops as the belt? does that wear on the belt? might be another reason to invest in a leather sporran strap.
