If someone's bound and determined to get a "weapon" through airport security, they're going to do it.
I'm more worried about the disposition of the "confiscated" items - I'm thinking that a number of TSA personnel may be collecting things they find interesting in the name of "safety."
You got lucky.
I find the idea that they'll confiscate items and then "auction" them to be reprehensible - some people get the opportunity to mail the item home. Others aren't so lucky.
