I see it as a very situational decision.
Since all my kilts are traditional height, I tuck in my shirts it the occasion is towards the dressy side. If a casual setting, I wear the shirt out.
I am not strict on buttons and tucking them in, unless the shirt buttons all the way to the bottom. I have a nice red Henley, with three buttons, that looks great untucked from my Black Stewart.
I like this photo of Ewan McGregor, and it does not appear his shirt is tucket in.
