I wear both types of plaids. The piper's plaid for parades and formal get togethers as a unit and the fly plaid for formal evening attire when not in a highland band type setting. I like the plaids and I think they bring the total look to a formal kilted evening.

I think the fly plaid is fine for very formal affairs. I had to wear a piper's plaid when I was in a band and disliked it because it was cumbersome.

Okay, now define a "formal affair".
I plan on wearing my Flyplaid while attending a reunion of the First Infantry Division this July. I would imagine that everyone there will be dressed anywhere from casual to suits, I'm curious to see if there will be another kilted person attending but I'm sure that I'll hear a lot about had they known that there would be kilts they would have worn theirs...lol
What about THE plaid? The blanket plaid that is usually worn folded and over the shoulder informally for cool evenings? I think that's still a great idea, unfortunately an expensive one with a plaid running upwards of $300.00 in Tartan.

I don't think there's anything Brigadoonish about plaids. I think they look great with formal attire, especially doublets.

Each August I go to the Sidmouth Folk Festival in Devon, a week long gathering, and I take my drum, amongst other instruments.
I find that a square of cloth folded like a plaid, worn under the strap of the drum on my shoulder makes it far more comfortable, and also is sufficient weight to stop the drum moving backwards. It also comes in handy, should the heaven's open, to shelter under, or in a cold wind it can be pulled around to keep me from feeling the draught.
The plaid might be considered posh, but it is also very useful when living out in the open air for a week.
The kilt has a casual aspect now, perhaps a plaid can also be reclaimed for everyday usefulness - I find it a much better option than a jacket.

I like my fly plaid. I wear it whenever I wear my PC suit.

"Lurking" ? I'm not sure I'd want to visit any place that "lurked".
It wasn't a bad muscial, I'm just used to watching a musical and humming the tunes of several of the songs. These ones just didn't stick. But still, THE TREWS, THE TREWS, OH MY THE TREWS!
