If the function you are attending is essentially casual dress, I wouldn't wear a plaid. If it is black tie then wear the fly plaid. The final decision is yours of course, you could wear a fly plaid and if you feel too conspicuous, you could remove it. How's that for not answering your question

I dress formally so seldom, that I like to add the fly plaid just for that little something extra. I will admit though, that on the second formal night of my cruise I didn't bother with the plaid (I already had my pictures).

Ham: No need to apologize.
I think flyplaids look fine for formal wear (i.e. weddings and such) and most pipers I've seen wear them well, fancy dress or no.

Wedding attire
I wore mine at my wedding and everyone thought it was just the BEST! It added a bit of color to my otherwise black jacket. (Looked good in the photos)

I know this is probably going to end up in the Dos and Don'ts thread (fly plaid on a Jacobite shirt - J. Higgins also shows one this way - with no formal jacket, brown shoes with black accessories, brooch maybe a bit too high)...
...but I like the way this outfit was pulled together. Is he casual or dressed up? I could imagine him going to a graduation party or a holiday party with friends - kind of along the lines of when I see people in jeans and tux tops. He has that devil-may-care look, as though he just pulled a bunch of stuff out of the closet and got on with his social schedule.

I tend to agree though, too much "stuff" just looks .. I dunno what the word is but fluffy comes to mind, like overdone.
