...I'm still trying to find out what happened to Burgundy...you remember the color Burgundy...

...and when it comes to insignificant distinctions between shades of a color, who better than Frasier and Niles:

Niles: What color is the new carpet?
Frasier: I'm going up a shade... to "Harvest Wheat."
Niles: I thought the next shade up was "Buff."
Frasier: It used to be, but they've discovered a whole new color in
    between.
Niles: So now it's "Tofu, Putty, Oatmeal"...
    Both: "Almond, Harvest Wheat"...
    Frasier: "and Buff."
Niles: That's going to be hard to get used to. [Frasier nods]

Although, in fairness, any shade of a color can have the distinction of being either a "warm" shade or a "cool" shade...this would make a difference in whether it goes well with a certain tartan...

So now it's "Burgundy, Claret, Cabernet...Merlot and then Port..."

    Hey Ron,

I'll stay out of the wine debate (although I love a good Merlot, dusky dry is best), but I do have a pair in merlot from SK. I can post a pic tonight from home, don't have one here in the office. For reference, the color is a deep red/maroon color, kind of like a pair of red hose that has had a heavy dose of purple added. Do you have any other SK hose yet? If so, tell me which colors (I have most of them) and I will snap the pic with the other color hose next to the merlot.

...thanks for the swatch...I guess that I'd ask if it's as "brown" of a red as it looks on my monitor...I know that monitors vary widely...as I mentioned earlier, some reds look more magenta, some more purple...there's a variation. And many fabrics look different when they're indoors or out in sunlight. In a previous life, I shot a lot of catalog pages for Sears and the towels particularly drove us all nuts...the dyes changed under different types of light (tungsten or strobe) and that was long before Photoshop came along and made it all easy.

I mean, I'm not trying to be argumentive but I've had things that are just off enough in the color area that they don't go with other things in the outfit...ties, shirts, etc. Sometimes a miss is as good as a mile.

    OKay, try this:

    http://www.sportkilt.com/ezcart/stylechart/HMER.jpg

Copy that into any graphics program you have, and tile it, then full-screen it.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for here, folks have given you descriptions, too. They're only eight bucks, and I'm assuming Sportkilt has a return policy, maybe you should just bite the bullet and see if they match 'in the flesh', you know?

(sorry, that sounded cranky, I'm having a rough day, I didn't mean for it to.)

Just got an email back from Seamus at Sportkilt.

He describes it "Merlot is just like a dark cranberry juice color (red). "

    Thanks for everyone's help...
