Dale,
I remember when I ordered my first kilt on January 25th (Burn's Night, how appropriate). Going over the Utilikits website I had no question about which one I was going to order, the gray Mocker. I can't understand why the gray wasn't more popular. I'm just glad I got mine before it was discontinued.
When I talk to people about my Utilikit and the subject of sporrans comes up, I just smile and stuff my hands into my pockets and then say "this is a modern kilt, don't need one". My advice. If their standard length works for you I would wait a bit, save some more, and then buy not only a sporran but also a Standard Acrylic kilt from Stillwater. Keep an eye on their auctions (they actually give you a link from their store to their current offerings on ebay). I really enjoy my Hunting McCleod from them, and really want a Royal or Black Steward as well.
I wear my Utilikilt with pride for what it is (OK, OK, with the hose and flashes, but that's my hang up), a modern kilt. I wear my tartan kilts for what they are, traditional kilts. I'm happy with both.
But the all important thing is how you feel when you are dressed up and heading out the door. That attitude is what will pull off the outfit, and is more important than what a bunch of posts advise.
Cheers

newbie here, but..... love my SWK nightstalker nylon. Very modern look and extremely functional. Long thread w/ pics elsewhere. I think I paid $25. Didn't come with a belt, I actually stole a nylon ~1" strap off a soft cooler, and it works great.
Whatever you choose, sporran or no, wear it with pride!!!

Lux,
I've been thinking about the Nighstalker as well, seems like a great value. Right now I have a very basic leather from SWK that I got for $15 with belt and chain, a great deal, and not a bad sporan either!

For looks and functionality-> the $60 ones at the Scottish Tartan Museum of Franklin, NC (Matt's place)
They are a bit more than the proscribed $40 cap, but these are
ACTUALLY USEABLE
and also look good
I have a black
COUNTRY SPORRAN
BK16(c) $59.95
Which I really love.
The older black one (like in many Scottish attire catalogues) I used to use is virtually useless by comparison. It is so stiff and narrow (front to back) that I canna git me han in it (sorry, slipped into P1M's dialect for a moment).
Seriously, this sporran is WELL worth the extra $20. It is my main sporran and the pattern one for the ones I am -attempting- to make myself (I hope I am not upsetting its creator, but your sporrans are THE GREATEST I'VE EVER USED OR EVEN SEEN!!!!!!). Two more of these (a brown one, a black tassled one, and an "inverness" one are on my short list for new "kilt items."

Hey Sourcerdale,
Stillwater Kilts has a inexpensive sporran for $15...I believe it's a close out. check out:

I actually bought one the other day. It's okay and very stiff. For the $, it seems like a good first item.
Cheers,
...I had just noticed Mystic wolf said the same thing a few posts earlier... I should read the entire post before moving onward

I bought my sporran off of E-bay and totally love it, and still talk to the guy who made it.
He does historically oriented leather work, and if you drop him a line and tell him your price range he can probably whip something out which you would be very happy with.
Here's my sporran made by him, I can't find his e-mail, but his E-bay ID is "leathermandbh"
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

Great looking sporran. Looks like real stiff leather though?
