    Memorial Day in the USA

I will be out on Monday but wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day in the US and I believe our cousins across the pond will be celebrating Bank Holiday. Don't forget to thank a vet and remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy days like these with friends and family.

All the US citizens out there should take a moment on Monday, while you are likely enjoying a day off, to remember the significance of the holiday. Some time during our lives, each of us should take a trip to Arlington National Cemetery and reflect on the meaning of the rows of white stones there; it's a very sobering thought. Unfortunately, because we have men and women currently in harm's way, the number will likely be greater by this time next year.

Thank you to all who serve or have served, many thanks to those who paid the ultimate price, and thank you to the families and friends who are most affected.

It's a bit sad to me...my daughter actually asked about why the object of the day has become so diluted when we spotted an old Vet with the poppies on the street. While it should be a thoughtful if not solemn day of rememberance and thanks I have to assume by the number of cases of beer that I saw going out of the supermarket yesterday that it will be the usual: barbecue, drink and get a price on a matress on sale.

To those who fell: honor and blessings.

To those who honor them appropriately: bless you as well.

    Best

    Memorial Day

I just changed my avatar to the shoulder insignia of the China-India-Burma (CBI) Theatre, in memory of my grandfather, Tech. Sgt. Charles L. Wilkinson, 1049th Signal Battalion, 14th Air Force, US Army Air Corps. Rest in Peace, Grandpa. I miss you.

Monday I will be participating in a "Parade of the American Soldier" program at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. Members of our local Sons of Union Veterans camp will dress as soldiers from the Revolution to Modern Day and discuss common soldier life with park visitors. I will be representing the Indian and Spanish-American Wars.

    Lest we forget.

I just came back from our local cemetary where I, along with some friends and members of the local scout troop placed flags on the graves of our departed veterans. To read the markers is a testament to the men who have died for our freedoms. There are veterans from the revolutionaary war right up to Desert Storm. I tried to say a prayer at each veterans stone as I placed the flag. If nothing else, just to say thanks.. It was quite a lesson for the scouts that helped. Maybe Scouts everywhere should do this at their local cemetaries. Well, must get ready for the big parade on Monday to honor those veterans that can still get out.. Happy Memorial Day. Thank a Vet.
