Seriously, maybe Alan H's story comes from a confusion between the words druids and Jewish? The DR and J sounds can be confused.

    Wow, a "Spaceballs" reference...too funny.

I see the majority of the comments posted here have been from strangers...but what about from people you know?

My personal favorite happened not too long ago...My fiance and I were leaving church this past Easter, filing out with the rest of the parishioners and we both noticed a lot of people staring (I guess they're just not used to it). Anyway, our church's pastor, Monsignor William Lynn (a man I greatly respect and admire), upon seeing me kilted grinned widely and loudly said, ""That's a mighty sharp outift you've got on there!".

We stopped to chat with him for a bit (about my kilt) as he continued to say "hello" and shake hands with the other parishioners as they were leaving...it was only then that they began to compliment me as well. I wonder if they just needed to hear Msgr. Lynn's approval before saying anything? Regardless, of all the nice things said, Msgr. Lynn's was the most gracious and heartfelt...his unstated 'approval' of my wearing kilts to church means a lot to me.

And now, I think the rest of my fellow parishioners are slowly but surely getting used to my being kilted.

    Good point MacS,

I hear the comment, "Nice outfit" more often than skirt comments. Used to correct and say its NOT and outfit....now just say thank you since I get their meaning.

Same here...If I hear the "S" word, I ignore it and keep quiet. No sense in justifying it with a response.

Case in point: A few years ago, in an Irish pub on St. Pat's (of all days), some drunken moron shouted "Hey! There's some Mick wearing a skirt in here!!" Though I just looked up and slyly smiled, I didn't have to say a thing because just about everyone that heard it started in on this guy and gave him one helluva talking to...'nuff said.

I think the defensive comments I've heard from strangers are my favourite. One time last year at school some girl (grade 8 or 9 at the time, and dressed quite... trashily) made some snarky skirt comment, and out of nowhere one of the seniors that I didn't know burt out with "Hey, you. It's a kilt, and if YOU want to think of it as a skirt, at least HE doesn't wear it like a tramp." It gathered a little popularity with the other seniors after that point.
