Same here...If I hear the "S" word, I ignore it and keep quiet. No sense in justifying it with a response.
Case in point: A few years ago, in an Irish pub on St. Pat's (of all days), some drunken moron shouted "Hey! There's some Mick wearing a skirt in here!!" Though I just looked up and slyly smiled, I didn't have to say a thing because just about everyone that heard it started in on this guy and gave him one helluva talking to...'nuff said.

I think the defensive comments I've heard from strangers are my favourite. One time last year at school some girl (grade 8 or 9 at the time, and dressed quite... trashily) made some snarky skirt comment, and out of nowhere one of the seniors that I didn't know burt out with "Hey, you. It's a kilt, and if YOU want to think of it as a skirt, at least HE doesn't wear it like a tramp." It gathered a little popularity with the other seniors after that point.

Most often, it's the wife telling the husband:
"Now, WHY DON"T YOU WEAR YOUR KILT!!!!"
and:
Nice Legs!!! Howlered across parking lots.
I'm never quite sure how to respond to this other than:
1-> THANKS
2-> A big grin
3-> if a nice looking female-> I like yours more.
