Hello gang!

Today was the last day I worked for "someone else".

14 years on the same job...feels a bit odd now.

I guess I need to chill down for a week or two, after that I'll start building my own business...many ideas, lots of work and a very uncertain future.

It was charming....I received many gifts and cards from my co workers...really sweet. From my bosses I got a weekend in a lovely hotel and two dinners in a scotish restaurant near the hotel.

I'm "free" now, but I'm also scared....and I feel very odd. 46 years old and a new start...pretty scary.

Congrats, Robin! I made a complete career change last year at age 42. Scary stuff, but I am sooooooo much happier for it. You will be too! Keep us informed as to your progress.

Hooray! Having made the transition from employee last year, I can confirm that while it is intimidating, there'll be many rewards from working for yourself. At least you should get on well with the boss

I became self employed at 53, after taking early retirement from thirty years local government service. It is a very bold step to take, particularly so if you intend to make it your only source of income. Working for yourself does give a feeling of satisfaction when the fee payments come in but there are a lot of unpaid hassles to it as well, book-keeping, tax forms, etc, and would be even more if I rented an office and employed staff. I find that my biggest overhead is professional indemnity insurance. I have never had a claim against me, but the high cost of cover is symptomatic of today's claim culture where some people think its OK to blame other people for all their misfortunes. Yes I do make a small profit which pays for the fun things in life but I certainly couldn't survive without my pension from my former employer which pays for life's essentials. Best of luck Robin.

Be prepared to be busier than you ever have been to get your business off the ground. At least all your efforts will be for yourself instead of someone else. Well, there's also the government, but they always have their hands out.
