Time to move on
I respect that people have the right to post in whatever style they want and many people think its cute/funny/authentic or whatever, however Im not prepared to stand and see Scots culture and language reduced to the level of a music hall joke. You might think Im taking things a bit seriously, however I find stereotypes downright offensive. And im even more disappointed that other members/mods think its funny/interesting/authentic/cute or whetever to demean our culture.
Maybe Im overreacting, but principles are principles and as I say I find it very offensive and annoying, so Ive decided to move on, I want to reduce the amount of time I spend on the net anyway, can I wish you all the best and be safe.

It is sad to think that I too may have offended someone.
We are all aware that many if not most Scots today speak a perfectly clear English. The language which you find so offensive (and the language I grew up with) is however still widespread, despite schools and well-meaning parents trying to beat it out of children for generations - and in this there are many parallels with most European minority languages.
It is of course a perfectly acceptable dialect (or language) with a long and distinguished history, in the same way that my local Low German is. We should be grateful that it is still alive and largely respected. I certainly am.
For my part, I am happy to converse with anyone, in any mutual language, as well as I can. Written Scots (and remember, few of us were ever given a chance to learn "proper" written Scots) is not particularly difficult for a native speaker of English to understand.
For outsiders, it may also be of interest to note that practically no minority language in Europe is spoken exclusively - all speakers have a perfect command of their own "official" language too.
It is indeed an odd concept that one can find an entire language "offensive".

Sorry you feel this way, Daz. I would have thought this place was big enough you could have found loads of threads to enjoy, without feeling offended. I hope you will be able to swing by every now and again and let us know how life is going for you.
