Lost in the sauce...
As you can see, I am still fairly new to the forums, but I can't seem to find any threads that extensively talk about tropical weather and kilt apparel. I'm currently in Hawaii and I still haven't quite gotten use to this eternal summer thing (originally from Indiana).
I have a Black Watch semi-trad from USAK, and I have finally decided to take the easy route out and go with oatmeal color hose (figured it would go well with my other three kilts). My problem now is what type of material I should start looking into for the hose (I want to get something that I can actually wear without my feet soaking in sweat).
Also, while I am on the subject of footwear, I was going to buy a pair of black all-leather oxfords but I also want a more "comfortable" pair of shoes to wear around on a regular basis. Any suggestions?

I'd opt for bare feet and go-aheads like all the natives wear. Mix the cultures and be comfortable!

EEEEeeeeek!! No, no Morath, PLEASE don't do that - pleeeze!
Plain colour shirts with tartan kilts at all times, if you don't mind! Hawaiian shirts, if you really HAVE to (!), with plain kilts (eg: Utilikilts), but never, never mix your patterns. I am on bended knee now!!
As for hose with Blackwatch: yes, oatmeal is good (light colours are especially good in warmer climes) and would be my choice too, especially when dressed casually. Navy and bottle-green hose, often worn with Blackwatch, are to my mind too 'heavy' looking and, in any case, darker colours in hose tend to be more formal. Oatmeal hose go with just about every tartan and look particularly good if the shirt (or top) is beige or similar. I fear I cannot advise you with regard to the materials though. All my kilt hose is either wool or a wool/nylon blend (but then I am in the UK, and not Hawaii!). I have heard of Soccer socks being worn as kilt hose, but I'd expect them to be all-nylon, or similar, and therefore quite hot in the wearing. If all else fails: try bare legs and sandals.
Shoes for kilts are tricky. The formal/semi-formal look is well serviced with polished business shoes - 'Oxfords'? - but otherwise the footwear really needs to be 'chunky' looking to achieve the right visual balance. That, of course, is easier to do here in Northern Europe, where we can wear boots even in summer, than it would be where you are.
I didn't mean to go on at such length, but the thought of a Hawaiian shirt worn with a tartan kilt just got me going!!

Welcome Morath!
Oatmeal hose would be fine, but why wear any at all? A pair of sandals would be fine. In this thread, I am wearing both a tie-dyed/patterned shirt, unconventional hat, and though you can't see it, a pair of beige colored athletic type sandals. And it all went well together. I do agree with Ham that a patterned shirt of any kind would be tough to match to a tartan kilt. It can be done, Matt has posted some pics on his blog of a long time kilt wearer wh has pulled it off, but I am nowhere near that color coordinated.
And I am actually sitting here in my Hawaiian Mickey mouse shirt with my gray UK mocker and I think it looks fine. Will post a pic this evening and see what others think.

If you wanted to wear your kilt hose, what about liner socks? I usually wear liner socks while hiking. It reduces chaffing and helps wick away moisture.
Here's an example from REI:

But in HI, not sure because you are wearing 2 socks instead of one.
As far as shoes go, take a look a Zappos.com. It's a great place to look at shoes/boots - almost too much stuff. Earlier post had recommended sandals...try these:

Cheers,

I was hoping someone would tell me that sandals were in the clear. My question then is whether or not I should go for a more "formal" sandal.....

...or if I should just go with the more athletic sandals like a pair of Tevas. I just really don't want to be approached by someone's mother and reprimanded on my bad taste in fashion....if that makes any sense.
And, don't worry! I would never dream of crossing the threshhold of Hawaiian shirts and tartans. I mean I am blind when it comes to color-coordination/fashion, but I'm not dead to it.
