A bit late, but ...
http://www.photoworks.com/servlet/Ge...b=PW&svr=web22
From top to bottom:
- my first sgian dubh from Atlanta Cutlery - modern style, but doesn't hold an edge well
- Clan Crest sgian dubh from ... I forget where. The flat side of the hilt has Robert Burns' "My Heart Is In The Highlands" on it.
- the first sgians dubh I made. Also the only sgians dubh I ever made. Blades from Atlanta Cutlery (which I have to finish sharpening), hilts courtesy of my dog. No, the antlers weren't his - he just found them shed in the woods. Sheaths are still unmade.
- Cold Steel Kraton Sgian Dubh - fiberglass reinforced plastic. Found it on eBay while looking for a Culloden. Can't be sharpened, but it doesn't need to be. Now if I could just make a sheath for it ...
4/29 - just posted these to my website, so this should work better than the link:

My daywear sgain dubh is from J. Nowill & Sons in Sheffield, and looks nearly identical to the first one in Wompets pic, but it holds an edge very nicely. I like the light weight and the smooth handle is very easy on the kneebone. I also have one of the Cold Steel Scottish Dirks, but don't carry it.

Once again, us Aussies have different rules about knives in public. As I understand it, we're not permitted to carry knives, concealed or otherwise. Not in a pouch on the belt, not in your pocket, and not in a bag. If found, you'll be arrested and charged with possession of a lethal weapon.
Which makes carrying a sgain dhub in your sock illegal...dammit.
And I like knives.. they can be such a thing of beauty.
How do the laws stand in other countries, folks?
cheers

In the US, they'll vary by state.
In my home state of Arizona, I can walk down the street with a sgian dubh in either stocking, a dirk on my belt, a broadsword on a baldric, a brace of pistols on that same baldric, and a Lochaber axe over my shoulder, and the only places I really can't go are pubs or bars that serve alcohol, banks or credit unions, or the courthouse. There are probably some other restrictions, but until very recently a number of the local grocery stores still had "Please check any weapons with the manager on duty" on their front doors.
That said, I don't have any pictures of my cutlery that I can post at the moment.

Here the law is no fixed blade knives, no blades over 3 inches, no spring action or switchblade knives of any kind.

Never mind, you don't get to carry these anywhere in Canada. Butterfly knives are restricted, like machine guns. Go figure.

Canadian knife laws are more dependent on the officers' interpretation. Certain knives are restricted, which actually means you can't have them at all. Switchblades, flick, and butterfly all come under automatic or one handed knives so they're outlawed.
There's a vague size that they must visible if they're over but it's not clear, about 3" if memory serves. Again, interpretation rules.
Anything is legal if it is visible but if the officer has any reason to wonder, you can be asked to put it away. If you argue, you fall into the trap of being contrary and now you're a risk so you can be charged.
Weapon laws here fall under intent so at any point anything can become a weapon. Knives fall under that. One moment they're a tool or cutlery, next moment they're a weapon. The most lethal weapon is still a kitchen paring knife in Canada.
There was a case a few years back where some biker was charged with concealed for having those little belt pouches. It was thrown out.
So, basically, in Canada, a skean dhu, in the sock would be legal. That would change if you got rowdy, or your friends did. At the moment the officer thinks it may be a weapon, it would become illegal.
disclaimer: not a lawyer, etc.
