Without trying to steer this one too far off course, the same is true for the Union flag. It is a royal flag and not a national flag. It is to be flown on government buildings on special occasions only (Commonwealth Day, Remembrance Day, St. George's Day, etc.)

I suspect there are many today that would fail to recognize the Cross of St. George as England's national flag.

Oddly enough, one of our society members who is a Bruce also attends the same parish that I do -- I usually make it a point not to sit by him during services!

the saltire definately for Scotland, and the Cross of St George for England, (and off topic but just a correction for Mike, the National Flag is the Union Flag and not exclusively a Royal one!)

    Union flag...

Mike and paulhenry are both right; the Union flag was once a "royal flag", but since then (according the British Monarchy's official web site), has been "adopted" for use by individual subjects, etc., with the exception of use at sea: There are other flags, such as the Red Ensign, Blue Ensign, etc. for that use -- the Royal Navy alone flies the Union "Jack" at sea.

Besides the Union flag, there is also the Royal Standard:

The Royal Standard represents the Sovereign and the United Kingdom.

The Royal Standard is flown when The Queen is in residence in one of the Royal Palaces, on The Queen's car on official journeys and on aircraft (when on the ground).

It may also be flown on any building, official or private (but not ecclesiastical buildings), during a visit by The Queen, if the owner or proprietor so requests.

The Royal Standard also used to be flown on board the Royal Yacht, when it was in service and The Queen was on board.

I love the design of the rampant but I prefer it in some of the other colors as it appears in the heraldry of various clans. For a display such as yours, I would have flown the maple between Québec's blue and white fleur de lys and Scotland's blue and white saltire, but that would be one flag for me mom and one for my dad. Great idea though. Thanks.

Besides liking Montreal, you wouldn't ever catch me flying the Quebec flag I have no French blood in me (like my wife), but I am full of Scottish blood.

The Lion Rampant is not a national flag. It's the Arms of the Monarch of Scotland, and though you see it used all the time in the United States (and I can only presume in Canada, as well) as a Scottish national flag, that is an incorrect usage.

Thank you, Matt! I was reading through the posts in the hope someone would point out that Scotland has only one flag. The Lion Rampant is not a national flag.

    Shut it Hibee.

Quite agree - Scotland has the oldest national flag - The Saltire.

The lion rampant is a royal standard. Not a national flag.
