Macwage,
I always wear a sporran* (smooth leather with tassles or cantle) with my traditional kilts. It along with kilt hose, sgian don't, and flashes completes the traditional kilt look for me. I don't wear one with my Utilikilt. I carry my cell phone in it's own leather belt pouch because rummaging about in my sporran to find my cell phone to only find that I missed the call bugs me.
*The only reason I stick with sporrans is that I have yet to find a Batman Utility Belt complete with proper accessories (Including the infamous Bat Shark Repellent).
Cheers

I'm new to the world of the kilt. I just purchased my first, a traditional family tartan from www.heritageofscotland.com. Anyhow, I just can't seem to imagine wearing one without the sporran, unless it was a utilikilt (this is high on my "next" list.)

I think you need an official What Would Batman Do t-shirt to figure it out. (You have to scroll about 1/2 way down the page).

Macwages, I am sure you have picked up by now that there are no rules, only personal preferences. Given that, I normally wear a sporran with any kilt that does not have pockets. Simply because I need someplace to carry at least a wallet and set of car keys. I have the standard cheap hard leather black one that everyone seems to sell, and so every new kilt wearer ends up buying because they need one and the price is right. Not really very stylish or spectacular, and it usually comes with a chain instead of a strap in case you have to attend an emergency black tie affair! But it is barely large enough to hold a wallet and some keys. I also have the SWK nylon black sporran and love it. Very practical for modern times while having a look that honors the traditional. I also have a "casual" brown leather sporrna that is far superior to my first cheap one and I am very fond of it. It does not have the compartments of the SWK, but is still very nice. There is a pic below. I have also worn fanny packs/bum bags and they work fine as well, although I find them a more casual look.
If the kilt I am wearing has actual pockets, at least a rear hip pocket for a wallet, I do not wear a sporran. I suppose I could, especially with my PK's, but with a rear pocket, 2 side slash pockets, and the underapron pocekt, it seems superfluous. For me, the sporran is a practical answer to no pockets in the kilt, not something that makes the kilt or is a required fashion accessory.

Do you wear a sporran with your kilt and why?
I only own a dress sporan to wear at social events.
If you don't use one, what do you carry your stuff in? What do you do?When I don't use a sporran, I have several alternatives. I have pocketed shirts and vests. My most creative alternative is to place all the things I need in a dark subtle bandana, pull the four corners of the bandana up around them, and run it through my kilt belt to create a sort of pouch on my side.
what are advantages and disadvantages?
Well the sporran (black rabbit fur) is really nice. No one knows what it is though, and I get a lot of questions. The bandana takes a moment to open and reclose, though.
How is it functionally?
The sporran is best for function. But the shirt pockets, vest pockets, and bandana pouch are all good.
What about looks/style?
Does a kilts sans sporran look too "skirt-like?"
Not at all. The plaid makes it undeniably a kilt. The sporran is usually the part people don't get in my home town.
