Show off your sgian dhu!

I know I'm a little late in posting, but I just finished this one today.

The blade is made by a smithy named Joe Yanta from Colorado who does a lot of historical bladeware, he had never made this style blade before and had only a few pictures I sent him to work from.The blade is properly tempered and hardened and takes a shaving edge! I think he did an excellent job!



He says he will make more and his prices are very reasonable, so if you're interested PM me and I will get you in contact with him.

The handle is all done by me. I used some antler I bought at a knick knack shop for I think $3 and some ebony bits I had laying around the shop.
I'm very happy the way it turned out and I feel I could take this sgian dubh camping and not be lacking in the knife department

After I posted my pics, I took a closer look at the rest of the thread and I must say that I am VERY impressed with the skills exhibited by the other forum members!
Certainly gave me ideas for more sgian dubhs :-)

Perhaps we should have some kind of sub forum for those of us who make our own kilt related gear.......hmmmmmmmmm

There are some really nice Sgian Dhu's on here. I've yet to buy one. I was a nice antler handled or a wood handled. Still looking...

That does look like a nice blade. The finished photos look like you took a lot of material off to get an edge, especially the middle pic. Is that just a photo illusion thing?

I didn't take much material off the edge, it's just that Joe often leaves his blades unpolished ("rustic forge marks" as he calls them) to give it more of an old timey appearance. When I sharpened it, I just polished the forged finish off with my stone.

If memory serves, I think the blade was in the $30 range.
Atlanta cutlery sells their Indian made blades for $15, I think the extra money for a custom forged properly tempred and hardened blade with a convex edge made from the good 1095 carbon steel which takes and holds a hair popping edge is well worth it :-)
