Over here they are 'all terrain' sandals, and very good for general walking over much of the country, and for day to day wear.
The grip is as good as boots for much of the time, but they do not offer as much protection as boots: so are not so good for such things as river crossing, scree running and the like, where protection is essential.
Too thorns can get at the feet.
