Should I or shouldn't I?
So... I just recently learned that I do in fact have some Irish heritage. My mother is a Carroll, which she says is "THE Irish family."
Now... I've been thinking that the Irish National tartan looks really nice. Being as I am not FROM Ireland, but I have some Irish lineage... what is the opinion on whether or not I would be "entitled" to sport such a tartan?
Knowing good and well I could wear whatever I choose... I'm just making conversation here.

If you are related to the Carrolls, you could also wear the Clan Cian tartan (aka O'Carroll). Strathmore woolen mill does it in an 11 oz weight.

Irish National tartan...
I've moved the thread over to the heraldry & tartans sub-section.
Another option would be an Irish county tartan, if you can trace your ancestors to a particular region in Ireland. They're "fashion" tartans, of course, but good-looking tartans nonetheless.
Cheers,
Todd

Hi,
Irish American tartan would be another option.
Bob
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there is.

I've Irish heritage, but am not FROM Ireland. I have full intention of buying an Irish National kilt.

Good!
Wear whatever tartan you want. As long as you show respect for the family/clan/district/country whose tartan you're wearing, anyone who has a problem with it isn't worth listening to.

definitly entitled...if only people born in scotland or ireland ( or other kilt-wearing countries) were "entitled to wear the kilt, then most of the people on this board would not be entitled to wear it!

Blazn,
I just had a laugh at what your mother said (reminds me of my grandmother)...I know a lot of O'Briens, O'Connells and O'Reillys who'd disagree with her.
No matter, Matt's correct in pointing out the Clan Cian tartan, which is totally appropriate. As others have mentioned, you could also wear the Irish National, Irish American, Irish Diaspora or any of the Irish County tartans (from House of Edgar). But, as you've already stated, you can wear nearly whatever tartan you choose to wear...even my own, the Fitzsimmons tartan.
Best of luck.
