If you want matching tartan flashes it's best to order them with the kilt, especially if it's an unusual or hard to find tartan.

Many kiltmakers will include flashes in the same tartan for no cost. Some do this automatically, and others will do so IF you let them know at the time your order is placed.

If you're only going to have one set of leather for awhile go with black since it can be casual or formal. I only have black myself and have never really been a fan of brown.

I'd love to find the kiltmaker that will include a set of tartan flashes at no extra charge...

I got a free set when I got my 8 yard handsewn from www.scottishkilts.net, I think kiltstore does it too.

Black seems to be the most versatile color, it works with everything. I ordered my black belt and my black sporran from the same supplier (Scottish Tartans Museum), they match very well. I am sure they were made by different manufacturers. Black is easier to match than brown.

You can always purchase the brown items later if you feel you want them. Get the solid color flashes to pick up one of the brighter colors in the kilt. I agree oatmeal hose is a good starting point and would work quite well with the kilt. I also like the matching flashes, you get probably get a pair with your kilt, they may cost a few extra bucks but are worth it.

That tartan is going to make a good looking kilt.
