I'm a fan of brown leather for casual for most of my tartans, but since the Paisley District tartan has black in it...I would go for...black leather

Oatmeal hose and a matching shirt or polo, bottle green or lovat blue flashes and you will be Hamish proof

Black is more common, but it depends on the color of the shoes you are wearing. Match the leathers to the shoes. If you are wearing sneakers or such, then it doesn't matter.

Just try to avoid wearing black belt brown sporran and reddish-leather shoes!!! I'm sure hamish would fly over just to educate you personally on the evils of such a mis-match!

Most of the straps on kilts are usually black. In the interest of matching shouldn't you only wear black belts?

This is one of the reasons I prefer kilts that don't have the third strap on the apron - the belt covers the two straps that are there.

If you want matching tartan flashes it's best to order them with the kilt, especially if it's an unusual or hard to find tartan.

Many kiltmakers will include flashes in the same tartan for no cost. Some do this automatically, and others will do so IF you let them know at the time your order is placed.

If you're only going to have one set of leather for awhile go with black since it can be casual or formal. I only have black myself and have never really been a fan of brown.
