Super pictures, Ron. Certainly living up to the name Riverkilt by going sailing up lake. Difficulty to imagine 106 degrees when its cold and overcast here in Scotland and I've had to turn on the heating again. You must visit Scotland if you'd prefer it cooler.

Great pictures! Brings back memories of the few trips made to the Southwest years back. I even recognize the arches from the hikes. What a beautiful place to live. It is hot though. I actually prefered water to drink most of the time. The sun and the lack of humidity can turn you into a prune in no time. Still it's one of the most beautiful and unique places in the country. Now I'll have to go back and hike there in a kilt. That would make more sense than a pair of hot and uncomfortable pants.

    Cheers! Bill

Great pics and scenery as always Ron. And remember it is a dry heat!

Yeah, like that makes a difference when you get to triple digits!

Aye, the heat is serious business. I've lived in the desert for over 30 years now and know how to take care of myself in the heat or when heat exhaustion is creeping up.

My lady ran flat into heat exhaustion on the trail, weak legs, nausea, all the usual signs. Had her tank up, loosen her garments, take off her hat, poured water over her head...got back to the boat moving from rare shady spot to rare shady spot with rest stops at each shade spot. We made the voyage back downlake on the lower (covered) deck. Was pretty obvious that during the voyage uplake, being on the upperdeck in the sun had baked her fluids out and she hadn't drunk enough water to replace them. In this dry heat you never feel yourself sweat, but you can lose a quart of water an hour.

This is my second year wearing kilts in the summer heat of the desert and canyonlands and there's no way I'd go back to pants or even shorts.

When I first came to the desert in '73 I was an active desert hiker, and long distance cycler. Did a LOT of study of effects of desert heat on the human body. Back then most of the info was left over from the War II North African campaign. With the previous and current desert war there must be new studies out there. On the one hand they ship in a LOT of water. But they still bundle up. Arabs have long used a "long kilt" principle to stay cool. Wonder if our G.I.s would be more comfy kilted. Know there are a few on the board who have experimented.

It sure works for me though.

    Hey Chris,

Sometimes when I look at other's pics I get the same thing. If I right click there's an option to "Show Picture." I click on that and it works...sometimes.

And, even weirder - maybe this board, I'll look at a serious of pics from P1M and the first half dozen or so will come up fine, then the rest come up the red X.

All the pics I post come from my gallery, you can try there. If they're red both on this board and at my gallery then I'm guessing its something weird out there.

    Excellent photos, as usual, Ron.

I just got back from a trip back East with the heat AND the humidity, and I must say I definitely prefer the dry air. It is actually quite dry here in Denver, although not nearly as hot as your location.

I too lived almost 30 years in Arizona and it is true that once you become acclimatized to it, you feel just fine. As long as you drink LOTS of water, that is. A lightweight Kilt in that climate would have been so much better, if only I had known.

In the United States, the type of natural event that causes the most deaths each year is:
    • Earthquakes
    • Floods
    • Shark attacks
    • Tornados
    • Lightning
    • Heat
    • Hurricanes
    • Snake bites
    • Volcanos
    • Mosquitoes (a.k.a. "skeeters")
    • Wildfires
    • Hail
    • Plague of frogs
    • People asking "whatcha wearin' under yer skurt?"

The correct answer is heat. More people broil themselves to death for various reasons and in various ways than any other natural disaster.

And on that cheerful note ...

    Regards,
    Scott Gilmore
