the ainly things wrang in those pics ai see arr:

fierst fella "judge"- kilt tae lang, baseball cap maks him luek like a numptie....

fella oan left "wi' mic" - kilt pin tae high and through baith aprons, tae formal fur an outdoor day event; jabot and jeekit arr baith a bit much, he also needs ghillie brogues...

fella oan richt "wi' walkin stick" - hose colour a bit aff, needs ghillie brogues, but e'ery thing else lueks fine...

I'd agree with that assessment for the most part.

As for the judge, I think the problem isn't the length of the kilt but how he's wearing it. It looks to me like the top of the kilt is just below the bottom of his vest, and his vest is cut for pants! So he's wearing a traditionally cut kilt on his hips instead of at his true waist. Therefore the bottom end has dropped three to four inches down to his hose-tops. Sad.

As for the set of pictures with the Mayor, well... First off, I think the mayor looks funny. With a Prince Charlie jacket, I personally think a tie is more appropriate than a jabot. The frills look great with a doublet but a PC needs a tie instead in my book. It just doesn't look right.

And as for the old gent with a walking stick, I think he looks great. But I would suggest retying his tie. The skinny end shouldn't be longer than the fat end!

Oh my Lord & Taylor, that one kid seems to be wearing a plaid mini-skirt with his boxers peaking out, and neckties tied around his legs! And what ever possessed the other to put a plaid broach on his throat like that. And is it me, or is the drummer wearing his kilt up so high it could be a maternity skirt?

That's not a PC - the Inverness flaps (tasses, whatever) make it a "Regulation Doublet," while if the buttons followed a line from the neck to a wider opening at the bottom, it would be a "Sheriffmuir doublet."

I'd have to class both the Regulation and the Sheriffmuir as "evening formalwear," and out-of-place in a daytime function.

Well...all IMHO.

Regulation doublet is for evening wear, not daytime. As is the jabot. And IMHO the Jabot doesn't really suit the regulation doublet - it works better with high collared doublets and waistcoats like the sheriffmuir, montrose or kenmore - a black bow tie works better with the collar seen on the regulation doublet, prince charlie and argyll jackets. Jabots shouldn't be worn with turn-down collars, but should be worn with collarless dress shirts - both mine have little buttonholes for the studs.

The chap on the right looks pretty good. Apart from the tartan tie. And, being picky, you could argue that the sporran is overly formal - a semi formal one, or plain leather would be better (but not everybody wants two sporrans. But if you've gone to the trouble of getting a tweed kilt jacket...) And one of his flashes has migrated round to the front of his hose, but that can happen to anyone.

The guy doing the judging...kilt too long/low. White hose (Yuk!). Ghillie brogues are too formal - a good pair of stout normal brogues would be better. Again, the sporran is too formal. Not sure about the baseball cap - I'm not convinced it's sufficiently formal for the occasion, but it is arguabaly a more sensible hat than a wool bonnet without a brim/peak on a hot, sunny day.

Interesting. I've always thought the ghillie brogues to be less formal than the buckle brogues (Mary Janes).
