If you were going to paint it, I think it would be more appropriate to paint the X white and the background blue, to mimic the white saltire cross.

But then, the background would tend to blend into the blue of the tartan.

hmm...good point...I'll have to look at the pin more carefully. I'll have to test with some nail polish remover, to ensure it doesn't damage the pin, then do a test to see how it works out. I'll post pics when I get a few minutes to make this happen!

Isn't this going to limit the number of kilts you can wear it on, color coordination-wise? I know people say one pin per kilt, but I don't always follow that rule; I like to mix and match.

I figure anyone who would give me a hard time about coordinating my kilt pin color to the tartan is on this board, so I'm not worried...

And I will chime in that I have also heard the one kilt pin for each kilt, but I don't follow it. I switch pins based on what kilt I am wearing and what pin I feel like at that time. From my point of view, kilt pins do less damage to a wool or comparable kilt than a tie pin/tack does and everybody takes the tie/pin out every time the put on and take off a tie.
