Long time wearer, first time poster.

I've been wearing kilts for awhile, and I'm in college now in Wisconsin (wearing my kilts to class!). My name is Long, changed from Laing during the potato famine, making me from the House of Gordon. I have a Gordon Hunting lightweight, a Gordon Dress 16oz., and an Irish National lightweight. I prefer my 16oz. and have a fly plaid and bagpipe cover matching the tartan. I hope to have a photo of me in my full regalia posted here soon.

Also (and I know this won't make me any friends) I'm not a fan of modern kilts. I like tartans. Taking the tartan off a kilt is like taking the drones out of a bagpipe. It loses it's *oomph*. So yeah, I stick with handmade wool. I don't go for Utilikilts and the like.

Anyways, I love these forums and I hope to see you around!

That opinion is not uncommon around here.

    Welcome!

    Welcome to X-Marks!

Number 1: great to hear that you wear kilts to class - so do I (but facing the class; did research at UWEC in 2002)

Number 2: of course you'll make friends even though you are not a fan of modern kilts - I'm one...

    Welcome,

I'm about twice your age but I can't see me ordering anything but a tartan in the near future. Right now it's BlackWatch, Black Stewart and Modern MacDonald (shared by the Kelly's of Ireland). You won't make any enemies when you can say that you wear your kilts to class. People around here have a great tolerance for anyone's opinion when it comes to their choice of kilts.

    Enjoy yourself here.

I once thought the same thing about modern kilts. Then the idea grew on me and last week I bought a Workman's Utilikilt from BMackay. You never know.

Welcome aboard. You'll find the entire spectrum of kilt wearers here. Some are strict traditionalists, who only wear the full tartan kilt in a certain way. Some wear strictly modern kilts in completely modern ways. Some only put on the kilt for special occasions and some wear the kilt everyday. Some only have the one special kilt in their closet and some have a multitude of different kilts (Hamish has 62 at last count ). And a few enjoy mixing the traditional kilt with non-traditional elements (check out riverkilt and his mixing of the kilt with western and Native American accessories).

Yet despite all the differences, we are a very civil lot. I think you'll enjoy your time here.

    Welcome from western NC!

I, too, started with only tartans, but I expect a SWK Black Shadow in the next few days. But whatever you choose, you'll find plenty of support here!
