Swatches!!

Woohoo!!! Happy dance time! I just got an email from Kathy that she has a swatch of the U.S. Air Force tartan she can send me! She's also going to send me a swatch of the New Mexico "Land of Enchantment" tartan as well. Just a little moment of gratification. I'm sure when I decide which one I want her to sew up, that will all rapidly depleat and be replace by the invetable trip to Jonestown. Oh, and I'm also about 90% sure my new SWK cargo sporran and Nightstalker flashes are in my mailbox today.. though I won't know for certain until I get home from work. happy days.

HAHA. Well, yes. I guess the "which one first" implied! After all this wedding craziness is done, I'll have a bit more liberty of kilt money. What's her general turn around time? I didn't think to ask her...

I have a swatch of it as well. I know the designer, Ralph Stevenson, through a Scottish organization we both belong to. Ralph also designed the new tartan to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Albequerque.

But Actually, I'm referring to the "Land of Enchantment" tartan (2530.) You were apparently referring to the State of New Mexico tartan (no. 2522.)

The "Land of Enchantment" tartan was designed by Polly Wittering. She also designed many of the Irish Tartans for the House of Edgar. (Speaking of that I need to see if I can get a swatch for the House of Edgar County Mayo.)

Interesting. I'll have to ask Ralph about the "other" New Mexico tartan. Ralph's was officially recognized by the NM State Legislature, so this other tartan is technically a "fashion" tartan, like the Irish County tartans by HoE, which are not recognized by any county governments.

Yes, the "other" one is a fashion tartan. But, just like the H of E tartans, it's pretty popular amongst folk and recognized, even if not necessarily by the State or government or what have you. Kathy endorses it and distributes and such. If you'd like to see it search it by number on the www.tartanauthoritys.com site.

He was past president of the St. Andrews Society of NM. The St. Andrew's Society endorsed the "Land of Enchantment" tartan designed by Polly Wittering (House of Edgar) in 1997.

Ultimately, the state legislature approved Stevenson's original tartan design. On May 26, 2003, Rebecca Vigil-Giron, Secretary of State for NM, issued a proclamation adopting this tartan as the official state tartan.

Thanks for again clarifying tartan discussion Matt. I love how you chime in on these Regardless of the New Mexico legislature's adoption of Stevenson's tartan, I'll be ordering my New Mexico kilt in Wittering's "Land of Enchantment" tartan. My state's approval doesn't mean a heck of a lot to me... but, won't get into that one!

No Todd, I understood you clearly. I was just stating what I had learned about it. And, I guess I was also stating that I still felt connection with it, even though it's not recognized by the State of New Mexico.
