Welcome from Phoenix!
I have not worn a kilt, I am still waiting for my first to arrive....
HOWEVER, I am not Scottish and I don't want to look like I'm pretending to be Scottish so I will lean more towards the modern kilts at least for everyday wear.
I will want some tartans for more dressy affairs and someone suggested I check out the Stillwater site, their prices are awesome!
However, even when wearing a tartan my goal is to be "American" as I can which will mean the only two "Scottish" things I really want are the kilt and the sporran. I just shudder to think of someone wearing a nice tartan with a fanny pack.

Welcome from New Mexico!
Yep, as everyone has said. No worries about a lack of friends due to your opinion. I myself prefer a tartan kilt with sporran, hose and flashes as a minimum. I haven't completely ruled out the thourght of a contemperary kilt, but I'm no where near buying one yet.

Welcome from Sunny California and the heart of Silicon Valley!
Wear the kilts you like, just be respectful of the kilts that others wear.
Enjoy X Marks!

Greetings from Canton, OH. a drinking town with a football problem! AS others have pointed out you will see a wide variety of opinions expressed about trad v. non-trad, the bottom line is, we all love the kilt in whatever form it may take!

Well, then, I'm glad it was you and not me who got it. So, I guess I won't scratch your eyes out now, after all.
Welcome, beloitpiper. I think I would prefer tartans and traditional kilts, too, but I had to start somewhere. I'm working my way up to it.

Welcome - and I think you'll find that XMarks is a pretty big tent. We come here to discuss the kilted life in all its forms. A man's choice for tartan or contemporary kilt is exactly that - his choice!

Welcome from Carlisle England, I also like tartan kilts & would not buy a modern one, but have no objections to anyone else wearing them.

A Kilt wearer regardless of traditional or modern is always most welcome here.
Glad that you showed up, and enjoy yourself.

Welcome! I too have shared your penchant for wearing the kilt to the classroom (currently from the student side), it makes for an interesting experience. I also share your scepticism of the non-traditional, but my interest has been growing since joining this site. I like Hamish's idea of the utilikilt, etc. as the "blue jeans" of the modern kilt-perhaps filling in where activities such as work might otherwise have detrimental effects on a beautiful (& expensive) kilt (see his well put commentary under the "Kilts in the Media section").
