The statement is a little too general for me; whilst the 1822 state visit by George VI, the British Monarch (he wasn't just the "King of England") and Sir Walter's efforts certainly influenced the tartan trade a great deal, I think it is more historically correct to say that the various weaving firms like Wilson's of Bannockburn share in the responsibility for the invention of the "clan tartan", along with the Chiefs themselves and the Highland Society of London!
