I will say that my wife was a little hesitant about the kilt at first. We have been to numerous gatherings where there were many kilted gentlemen in attendance. We have been to Kirkin's, St Andrew's Society Meetings, Burns Suppers, highland games, Hogmanay and Christmas parties, she now thinks nothing of my wearing the kilt. In fact everytime I put it on she now says "You look very nice honey".
The kilt has been a huge factor in making new friends.
