Kilt with a waistcoat and tie?????

    Hi all,

I am getting married in November and have had a kilt made for the occassion in the Scottish town where I used to work. It is in my local district tartan rather than a clan tartan. ANyway, I dont really want to wear a bow tie or cravat with the Princr charlie jacket so was wondering how a 8 buttoned waistcoat ( standard hire job ) in a pale colour/ivory with a tie or fatboy tie and wingtip collar would go with the Prince charlie jacket and kilt.
I am hoping that on this forum you guys would have photos of kilts with various outfits etc. Problem is I probably wont be able to try it together before the wedding because I will be hiring the rest of the outfit!!

Any ideas would be great thanx guys!!

    Hi Moovet,

    Firstly, welcome to X Marks.

What you are describing certainly sounds as if you want to break away from 'the traditional' wedding outfit but, to be honest, I don't think it would work at all - it would look a bit of a mess! You don't have to wear a Prince Charlie - there are other styles of formal/semi-formal jackets you could choose.

Many of the Scottish Highland Dress outfitters have some very unusual and really 'different' wedding outfits for hire these days, so I'd shop around. A jacket and waistcoat like this, seems to be what you might be looking for:

This one is available from www.thekiltstore.com in Edinburgh.

The standard tie would present a less formal look than a bowtie. Do you have something against bowties?

With my PC jacket... the waistcoat is the same color as the jacket... black. (I personally have never seen a light waistcoat worn woth a dark jacket.)

Also, I've never seen a wingtip shirt worn with anything but a bowtie.

So what district tartan is the kilt?

    Welcome to the board!

The outfit that Hamish has referenced is great. For some reason I'm not that crazy about the bow tie look or the jabot look either...probably part of why I'm not interested in getting a PC jacket...a Montrose or a Sherrifmuir would almost be preferable (to me) except that they look rather "military". The look illustrated above definitely would agree with my outlook on going formal. Hope you can find what you're looking for, Moovet...thanks to Hamish for giving the reference to a really good alternative...one more suit of clothes to add to the list...please...no one tell my wife....

    Thanx guys,

Yeah that photo isnt too dissimilar to what I had in mind? Would an Argyll jacket do the trick. My wife-to be isn't too keen on bow ties and I prefer smart cravats and fatboy ties if there is enough waistcoat to cover your chest. With the PC jacket and vest there isnt. So that photo is pretty damen close even the colour of the waistcoat. Doesn't look to bad to me? Any other opinions on that? Anyone with similar photos?

I am wearing Teviotdale tartan from Hawick

I my opinion a Argyle jacket would look good with white shirt & plain colour tie for the wedding-match the tie with a colour on the kilt. Good luck
