Who owns (or doesn't own) a kilt in their 'own' tartan?

Maybe the question has arisen before, but who actually owns a kilt in their 'own' tartan? Your own clan, regiment or maybe district tartan - rather than anything more tenuous? Or not.

I don't (I could never find a used kilt in Logan tartan, and didn't want a cheap kilt in Flower of Scotland or "Walker of Shortbread" tartan).

It's not my intention to kick off a discussion about 'entitlement' or 'tartan police' - I'd just be interested to hear who has and hasn't, can't, or maybe even won't (maybe your clan tartan doesn't go with your complexion or whatever )... Or maybe like me you've hired a kilt in the past and had little choice.

My next kilt will be the Iowa state tartan, where my Scottish ancestors settled after immigrating to the United States.

My tartan is the Aberdeen district tartan. My wive had 9 yards woven for me as a wedding present (in cotton - the weaver told us first that we had to have 9 for a kilt, but cotton would be cheaper - would that X-mark had been around in 1997). I have only worn it as a great kilt (cut in half and sewn back together as a 4 1/2 yd, but still my first kilt).

About a year ago, I was talking to Jeff at PK, and he was willing to take half of it, line it and try and make me one of his with the pockets on the inside. Sadly not gonna happen now.

I was going to check with Matt about a box pleat, but I'm afraid the material won't be heave enough without a lining of some kind.

Short answer: I don't think so.

I think that "my" tartan is Royal Stewart. My only kilt is in Navy Stewart, but I am not sure that I can claim that is really my family tartan. Navy Stewart is a fashion tartan. Even though I have found about 100 tartans called Stewart (counting ancient, weathered and modern colours separately, but not counting the geographically specific ones), I am not sure if any of them are "official". As far as I can tell, there is no clan chief to decide.

But between the Stewart, Nova Scotia and British Columbia tartans, I can have as many kilts as Hamish and can claim them all as "mine."

I do not because I don't like any of the Kennedy tartans. I stick with district or generic tartans like the Irish American and Ireland's National. The rest are solids.

I own a heavyweight kilt in my family tartan, Cunningham, which is a Lowland clan, therefore strictly speaking a tartan for trews rather than a kilt.

I have a Gunn modern, which is my clan tartan. It's a PV kilt in a heavier weight than most of the rest of the PV I've seen, made by a kiltmaker who was around several years ago . . . SouthernCelt.

As a Texan, one of the items on my wish list is the Texas Bluebonnet District tartan.

edit: forgot to mention that also on the list is the Welsh Evans tartan, for my Mom's side of the family.
