Filson 20 Pocket Travel Vest Instead of a Sporran

So, last week I'm in Flagstaff and see the Filson #556 Twenty pocket travel vest, in my size, for 25% off. That's still a lot since it sells for $145.00 USD.

So I didn't buy it...but as much as I prefer a vest instead of a sporran when the weather is cool enough it kept calling me. Then I got my Filson catalog and the travel vest is still full price from the factory...so this was a deal for sure.

This week I was back in Flagstaff for the Highland Celtic Festival and stopped in to see if it was still there. It was. I bought it. Made a deal with the sales lady that she'd have to take my picture in it if I bought it.

Yes, I still had a sporran on.

It only comes in one color, Desert Tan. But if you know Filson you know they're top quality for over 100 years now. I wore my first Filson jacket as a boy working underground in the mines in 1963. Filson makes bulletproof garments. The cloth on this vest is lightweight 6 oz cotton, but strong. Pockets within pockets within pockets.

I discovered Filson about 12 years ago when I moved to the Seattle area. Instantly fell in love. Perhaps not high on the fashion charts, but time tested, indestructable outdoor gear for when you really need it. Great little side stories in their catalogs. If you are ever in Seattle, check out their store--it's a museum all by itself.

To tie it back to kilts, Filson has always been the best proponent of wool and all it's great properties. Something we kilt wearers appreciate.

A good idea-for those in the UK-Rohan do an excellent travel waistcoat, with ample pockets-that with a side sporran and on can face anything.

As much as I like the idea of a vest, tried the Filson and the 5.11, I can not warm up to them. How do you get used to it?

No clue, I've been a "vest junkie" most of my life. Just like having my "stuff" higher up on my body I guess. In cool weather of course.

Hard to find vests with enough pockets to replace a sporran.

Didn't take a picture because he looked so gross, and fear it may be a new fashion, on the last trip down canyon a European guy on the raft wore a vest and no shirt. Just a lot of hair underneath. That looked weird to me. Can't recall what nation he was from. Maybe it looked weird to me because he wore it closed in front rather than open.

I wear my ranger vest ($49 from a military surplus site) instead of a sporran around the neighborhood for shopping, etc. I happen to like it a lot. Of course, I don't have an actual sporran yet, but I think I'm likely to continue the habit when I do get one.

As for being practical, there is nothing better than a good vest. LIke Riverkilt, I've been a "vest junkie" since I was a wee lad. I must own 10 or 12 of various stripe.

As for wearing the kilt, I doubt I'd leave the sporran since it holds down the equipment when I sit and assures modesty. A vist won't serve that purpose!

    Hi Ron,

Like you, I prefer to dispense with the sporran whenever I am wearing a jacket or waistcoat with pockets sufficiently capacious. I don't know the brand 'Filson' and, indeed, I own no fabric garments such as the one you have bought, but I DO have a superb leather waistcoat (with more pockets than I have ever been able to use - it even has pockets on pockets!) from UnionKilts in Wales, and that has become a true favourite. Unfortunately, now we are officially in Winter, it is too cold to wear just the waistcoat - this is tweed jacket or leather bomber weather! Yours is looking good, though.
