I have one pair of heavy leather sandals and would NEVER wear them with my traditional kilts. When it's really hot I will put them on with my grey UK with a matching belt. Like mddock58 I have thought to my self "More Gladiator than Highlander".

Adding my voice to the general consensus:
Boots: low hose or calf-high socks (non-trad kilts only)
Low shoes: hose pulled up
Sandals: no hose or socks, casual only
Overshoes/gaiters: doesn't matter, you can't see them anyway.

In really hot weather I've been wearing "Wolverines" with no socks due to the heat. I think I've convinced myself that a pair of leather sandals would be more comfortable.

Well, I guess I am in the minority then, I think that any shoes that would go with trousers/shorts (depending on the occasion) should be acceptable for wearing with my kilts, as long as I follow good fashion sense and coordinate the colors. If kilts are really as versatile as we believe, then they should coordinate with footwear, belts, shirts, and everything else in our wardrobe in the same way as pants. I love wearing flip-flops/sandals/open-toed shoes whenever the weather is above 45. They are much more comfortable and allow my feet to breathe, similar to the way that kilts liberate other body parts. If I can be comfortable, I will be, and as far as kilt fashion is concerned, I make the fashion! Nobody that I encounter on a daily basis has a clue, and sandals with my casual kilts is (to me) more fashionable than the gentleman that wore a polo shirt, slacks, and brown sandals to work last week! Good god man, at least wear those sandals with shorts!

I've got my own standards for this one:

Formal=Kilt hose & Ghillie Brogues

Semi-Formal=Kilt hose & Nice Dress Shoes (clean and shiny) Brown Belt sporan and shoes or All black, whichever goes best.

Casual=Boots and folded down heavy woven socks, Mid rise boots are acceptable. Also must be worn with casual shirts which includes anything with pictures, numbers or advertising on it.

Hot=No shirt, no shoes, any sandals, surfer trunks under Kilt ready to swim in 20 seconds

Today has been a record breaker in the South of England - at least I think so - I am dizzy with the heat.

The tarmac on the roads has been melting. It is now pouring with rain.

So - 4yard cotton kilt, polo shirt, short socks and suede and leather sandals with an enclosed toe - actually cooler than open toed sandals for walking as the air is pushed out on each step.

On venturing outside added Tilley hat and factor 60 sun screen - liveable out there but only just.

Getting into a car was like climbing into an oven.

This week has been a heat wave in the midwest, we topped out @ 106 today and this weekend I wore my khaki AK with my adidas samba indoor soccer (football) shoes and calf length white socks pushed down. I like the look of athletic socks pushed down with the low shoe because it gives a boot like line with the AK but that's just my visual. When it's cooler I wear Sketchers mid-high boots with hiking socks. I usually reserve the kilt hose for my trad kilt, dress occasions or cold weather.

In the current heatwave in England - OK maybe not as hot as some other places but definitely uncomfortable - I've been wearing my 7yd PV Ancient McKay casual, short sleeve shirt, Teva sandals and no socks.

One of my daughters refers to it as my Roman Soldier look. Some of my more traditional kilt wearing friends (fellow dancers) have called this look "uncouth." But I find it very comfortable and I get regular comments from folk I meet in the street or supermarket that "someone definitely has the right idea in this weather!"
