Which explains why I, at 6'0" and 30" inseam, can buy a UK from John in the short length, wear it like I wear jeans, and have it be the right length for me at the top of my knees.
21 1/2" long (UK short) works for me for my UKs and my USAKilt Casuals.

I'm 5'6" tall and wear all my kilts, except for summer work kilts, 20" long. My Utilikilts are sized extra short (20").
As for rules about kilt length I think all the posts ahead of this one have done a great job of articulating them.
I base the length of my kilts on comfort, mostly. I work outside and am well aware of how to keep cool. In a kilt you will tend to be hotter if your kilt covers the back of your knee ... this spot and the inside of your wrists are places the body uses to cool you off. Keeping your kilt length above the back of your knee will make your kilt feel much cooler, though it will be at least an inch or two above your knee.
Depending on your build any kilt shorter than this is going to be too short for going regimental ... mostly because you'll have no kilt to sit on, not because you'll show while walking about. Also, I'm a construction worker and have the build to support wearing a shorter kilt ... I've got the legs for it and the arms to back it up, so to speak. My summer work kilts are 18" long and I've been known on really hot days to roll down the waist to make it 2" shorter.
A 16" kilt is damned short ... don't try this unless your the kind of guy that nobody is going to mess with. But, if you've got the legs for it you can look GREAT in a shorter kilt. I've never had anyone make a negative comment about the lengths of my kilts, but I've had surprising amounts of positive feedback on the shorter ones. I've got a black Utilikilt Original, a custom mini, 17" long that I'll wear to pubs with black lace up boots and a black sleeveless t-shirt ... rarely do I have to buy my own drinks.
As for shorter kilts and going Regimental I strongly recommend against it. The mystery of what you have on or not under your kilt is a powerful thing. Frankly, most folks would rather wonder than know ... actually knowing that you are naked under a mini kilt is not going to endear you to anyone, customers or staff. In the non-kilted world you go from incredibly masculine guy to pervert in a split second.
As for fetish wear, well, I don't know what that is. (Hey, Peggy, did I leave my riding crop in the truck again?) Shame on you for thinkin' like that, Reader, this is TEXAS ...
Kilt, not too long or short, On!

At 6'0" my UK's are a perfect fit in the short and the xs. My comfort in the above the knee length isn't an issue for me. I've the leather UK and it is long, bottom of knee length. No sweat, because it's leather the longer fall gives an added appeal for me. All of my other kilts are top of knee or above knee length and I am as comfy as can be for my leg length.
I think the descriptors short, xshort, especially mini and micro are a bit proprietary from the feminine hem lengths and too easily afford us an opportunity to visualize our own kilt lengths from a skewed perspective.

- In the centre of the kneecap, 18 votes, 47.37%
- Below the kneecap, 16 votes, 42.11%
POLL QUESTION: How do you wear your Utilikilt®?

So, a new question might ask, "Do you wear your micro length UK down about the hips y/n and where does the hem fall? far above knee; above knee; at knee or bottom of knee.
A second ? could ask, "Do you wear your long kilt upon or over the navel y/n; and does the length reach above, at or bottom of knee?
Perhaps one of us (not me) could develop a few poll questions and run it for a week or so. The instruction for writing a poll is in FAQ. I'm no pollster and don't know what to look for in writing poll ?'s. Next comes compiling and interpreting the raw data. Whooa. Out of my area!

I'm still pretty new to kilt wearing and as it turns out I am wearing my Utilikilt down on my hips so the hem just reaches below my knee. If it was shorter I don't know if I'd feel comfortable.
Now.....I just ordered a Union Kilt in denim and it's 1.5 inches shorter. So there's no way that will cover my knees and I guess I might be forced to show a little more leg.
I might keep that on the side until winter here when I'm more used to these things.

I am 6' tall and I just ordered my first kilt from SportKilt. They come at a standard length of 22.5". I am not sure where it's supposed to go on my knee cause it seems that everyone is of differing opinion.
I hope it's not too long cause I won't have time to get it hemmed cause I am wearing it to an event this weekend.
Anyone out there own a SportKilt? How was the length? For those that are around my height, 6', does 22.5" in length sound about right or too long?
Thanks in advance mates.

I'm 5'10 or 11 and have short legs and long torso. I wear my SK at my navel to ensure it hits at the top of the knee.
