I totally agree with you, Robin.
I've been wearing handmade wool hose for the past couple of months, even in hot weather, and I always wear them pushed down. I've become a convert (if you will) and I doubt I'll ever wear anything else for casual wear. The wool hose I have (from USA Kilts) are well made and I have zero heat or odor problems when wearing them during warmer weather (80's and 90's). I generally wear these hose with either brown or black Doc Marten boots (for comfort more so than style).
I seldom go 'dress' (few occasions to do so) but I wear a simple pair of balc wingtips or oxford shoes (not a fan of ghillies) with my cream or colored kilt hose pulled up.
My thoughts: Hose down with boots (unless you're in a very cold climate and need to keep your legs warm), and hose up with brogues/wingtips (etc).
