Good point--it is a personal choice, and those choices are usually based on comfort and/or neccessity. I suppose there may indeed be instances where it is prudent to wear some type of undergarment, but it's up to you to choose. Personally, I say who cares? Underwear are not generally a neccessity [especially in trousers or shorts] and chances are no will have any idea or even care whether you are wearing underwear or not [excepting natural circumstances or a kilt-check ].
I did read somewhere regarding this that "a man who wears underwear wears a skirt." I am still new to the kilt, but I think that such statements are simply machismo comments to be taken with a grain of salt.
On the other hand, part of the freedom of the kilt is not having anything to restrict you south of the waist. So for me, wearing an undergarment is giving up some of that freedom, and I don't foresee a situation where it would be neccessary; prudent, perhaps, but not neccessary. I have never liked underwear of any kind, and I think that if one takes care when kilting, no one will be the wiser unless you want them to.
