    Making leather lace?

There are a lot of leatherworkers here, maybe someone can help me. I need to make leather lace for a pair of Roman caligae I'm making. I don't want to use to suede lace I can get at the craft store, since it's rather weak. My grandpa showed me a way to make lace with a disk of leather a long time ago, but I can't remember exactly how to do it now. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to make lace/thong?

I've been making lace for braiding and use a Australian strander I bought at Tandy.

Since you're making caligae, check out this site:

Also, look at the jewlery making areas of craft stores. I know Hobby Lobby has real nice leather (not suede) laces, including deer hide. I'll look tomorrow at the length of them.
